Newport House Hotel

A country mansion of character and elegance, Newport House is situated at a focal point among the beauties of West Mayo. For 200 years the country estate was the home of a branch of the O'Donel family, descended from the fighting Earls of Tyrconnell and cousins of the famous "Red Hugh" of Irish history. They were transplanted from Ulster to Mayo by Oliver Cromwell. Built on earlier foundations, Newport House is Georgian in character. The small alcoves on the ground floor have plasterwork of flowing elegance reminiscent of this first style, whereas the stucco work under the lantern is evidence of an extension to allow a grandeur and light for the main staircase. The main hall, with the graceful line of the staircase surmounted by lantern and dome, is an outstanding feature of the house. There is also leading off the gallery upstairs, the drawing room, with Regency style mirrors and chandelier and windows looking out onto the garden and park.
