The Isle of Islay, southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, found about 20 nautical miles west of the Kintyre Peninsula, is home to The Machrie. If a fabulously remote luxury golf resort with nine exceptional malt whisky distilleries only several to 20 miles away strikes your fancy, this is your dream. The par 72 course is a treat at 6,782 yards. Golf dates to 1891 but in 2017 it reopened after a major modernization including the addition of a six-hole short course. The fairways are wider now and several of the blind shots have been removed but make no mistake this is a classic links. In 2018, the completely refurbished and expanded hotel opened with 47 rooms, suites, lodges and The PureGray Spa. Overlooking the Laggan Bay is 18, the hotel restaurant and bar serving fine Scottish cuisine. You will not find a property like this, somewhere like this, very often.
