Algarve Day Tour - Vineyard, Silves & Alte
This morning enjoy a visit to one of the vineyards around the Lagoa area of the Algarve. Enjoy a tour of the vineyard followed by tastings, if you are visiting during harvesting in the late summer or early autumn you will be able to see the grapes being gathered and pressed.
Lunch in a local village restaurant before continuing to Silves, an enchanting town littered with orange and lemon trees, sitting on the banks of the Rio Arade. With its medieval castle it was once the Moorish capital of the Algarve. The castle and the Cathedral beside it are the first buildings you see as you approach Silves, as they sit on the hilltop above the town. From the castle a network of narrow, cobbled streets take you down into the town.
After time spent in Silves travel inland through Messines to Alte, one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve. Perched on a hill with whitewashed houses with lattice work and handcrafted chimneys, pretty streams and waterfalls that cascade down narrow cobbled streets nestling in the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirao. The church is at the centre of the village, and there are numerous little cafes in the surrounding area, to relax at and soak up the tranquility of the village. You can also visit the springs for which this mountain village is also known before returning to your hotel late afternoon.Today play Quinta do Lago South . The South Course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who introduced American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve. Set among umbrella pines, lakes and wild flowers, overlooking the serene Ria Formosa Natural Park. Consistently recognized as the finest conditioned course in the Algarve.

Day 5 Monte Rei
Algarve Day Tour - Moncarpacho & Tavira
Today travel east to Moncarpacho where Monterosa Extra Virgin Olive Oil is produced. The olives are grown, extracted and bottled on the plantation. You can see around the grove and the original press which dates to Roman times and purchase the oil directly. Following the visit continue to Tavira in the Eastern Algarve.
Tavira is gently dignified and picturesque, particularly pleasant down by the banks of the River Gilhao which runs through it. Painted boats, palm trees and benches line the promenade along its banks. Four hundred year-old houses peer at their reflections in its waters. The ancient seven arch bridge, only open to pedestrians provides a great place to take all this in. The remains of the castle offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area, it's an easy walk up to the castle battlements. From there you look over 18th-century pyramid-shaped rooftops, a distinctive characteristic of the eastern part of the Algarve, out to the working salt-pans and the sea beyond.
On both sides of the river you can find good shopping with local produce, including fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, basket ware, pottery, ceramic tiles, wrought iron work, and cork and shell handicrafts. Enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants on the riverfront or in the fascinating cobbled side streets.
Tavira arguably has some of the finest churches in the Algarve and they are plentiful too, in fact there are more than 20 in and around the town! The 16th century Igreja da Misericórdia is often cited as one of the finest churches in Tavira, with its blue and white azuejos, magnificent carvings and scenes from the life of Christ. It is located up the hill just past the tourist office. Walk up the side of the church and then turn left and you will arrive at the13th century Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo which is next to the castle. Santa Maria is famed for holding the tombs of the seven Christian knights of the Order of St. James who were killed by the Moors. The 13th century castle, re-built by King Dinis from Moorish fortifications, gives fantastic views across Tavira from the walls.
Time permitting enjoy a short visit to the tiny village of Cacela Velha. It is just a handful of typically Algarvean whitewashed houses, a church and a fort around a cobbled square but the views and village are delightful.Today play Monte Rei - Northern Course . It is located in the Eastern Algarve close to the Spanish border. This Jack Nicklaus signature golf course uses the natural, rolling terrain of the area to present a challenging layout including natural water hazards, indigenous trees and plants. As you would expect from a Jack Nicklaus design, it provides an enjoyable & challenging experience for golfers of all abilities.

Day 8
Lisbon Day Tour - Lisbon City Highlights
Tour Portugal's capital city, Lisbon. Razed to the ground following the earthquake in 1755, the city is essentially 18th century with carefully planned elegant streets of the Baixa, to the narrow streets of the Alfama and Bairro Alto. Since its glory days during the Age of Discovery, Lisbon has been an important port. The great monuments in Belem bear witness to the city' s maritime past and where the visits will commence.
The Belem Tower, the city's most photographed landmark dates back to 1515. The tower was built as a fortress in the middle of the River Tagus and was the starting point for the navigators who set out to discover the trade routes. Visit the nearby Monument to the Discoveries, with its huge pavement compass and then onto Jeronimos Monastery. This magnificent monastery is considered one of the most prominent monuments in Lisbon and is certainly one of the most successful achievements of the Manueline style of architecture. (Please note that the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery are closed on Mondays)
Continue into Lisbon for lunch and head into the Alfama. A visit to Sao Jorge Castelo also commands impressive vistas, with the rambling Alfama old town rumbling away below the ramparts and the grid-like order of the Baixa visible just to the west. The Baixa is the business and shopping centre of the city, boasting its grandest square, Praca do Comercio, which lies right on the banks of the River Tagus. Baixa borders the Biarro Alto, a hilly coil of narrow streets that buzzes with shoppers by day and partygoers at night.
Time in the city can be designed to personal preferences before returning to your hotel.Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort - Deluxe Forest View Room

Day 9 Penha Longa - Atlantic
Lisbon Day Tour - Sintra
A short drive will take you to Sintra and its mystical hills dotted with fairytale palaces and extravagant villas which have bewitched visitors for centuries. It's history back back to Roman times, through the Moors occupation and laterly it became the summer residence of the Portuguese Royal family and attracted a number of wealthy aristocrats who built huge mansions and villas. It is an extraordinary place with a surreal mixture of history and fantasy, protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, with fairytale palaces, incredible vistas, and notable museum collections. Exploring on foot will involve a lot of walking and climbing up and down its steep hills. For a more leisurely tour take one of the horse and carriage rides around the town.
In the main square is the National Palace, dating from the 14th century. Its two gigantic conical chimneys are the town's most recognizable landmarks, while the rest of the building is a combination of the Moorish, Gothic and Manueline styles. Inside it possesses what is said to be the most extensive collection of colored glazed tiles in the world, and several exceptional rooms. The most famous building in Sintra is Pena Palace. Built in the 1840's from the ruins of the old monastery, it is one of Europe's most fantastic palaces, it includes a drawbridge, a conglomeration of turrets, ramparts, and domes, and a gargoyle above a Neo-Manueline arch, all washed in an array of pastel shades. The extravagant interior is decorated in late Victorian and Edwardian furnishings, rich ornaments, paintings, and priceless porcelain preserved just as the royal family left them.
Surrounding the palace is the mystical Pena Park, filled with a variety of trees and exotic plants from the former colonies of the Portuguese empire, ponds, fountains, and black swans. Overlooking it all is the 8th century Moorish Castle, standing on top of Sintra's highest hill. Snaking along the mountain ridge, it offers breathtaking views of the area.
As you walk around Sintra you will encounter a number of natural fountains that have been given striking decorations. Stop for a drink after all the sightseeing or to wash down a sweet Queijada de Sintra, a local specialty. It is a cheese tart spiced with cinnamon available at most cafes and pastry shops in town, but the most popular place to sample them is at Casa da Piriquita, an inviting cafe with a warm atmosphere just around the corner from the National Palace.Play the Atlantic Course at Penha Longa , designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., was opened in 1992. This 18 hole, par 72 championship course of 7,000 yards is particularly attractive due to the conditioning and breathtaking views of the ocean with Estoril and Cascais in the foreground, and also of the Sintra Hills. It hosted the 1994 & 1995 Portuguese Open Championships.

Frequently Asked Questions
To help you decide, we've compiled answers to common questions about our Custom Tours. Curious about itineraries, accommodations, or logistics? Our FAQs cover it all. For personalized advice, our Golf Travel Experts are ready to assist.
-
How far in advance should I book a trip to ensure best availability?
Our best advice is to decide on your preferred trip and confirm the dates as soon as possible, for everything is a component of availability. If you are traveling during high season, the golf courses can have significant demand and sooner we are able to submit your groups request for tee times and similarly to the hotels, the likelihood of securing your exact, preferred schedule is enhanced.
-
What is the optimum size of a group?
Every group has different dynamics but we believe that groups of 8 travelers are more preferred, for two reasons; (1) a group of 8 people remains small enough that everyone can interact with each other easily and (2) in terms of access to golf tee times and hotel arrangements we have found this size of group to be the easiest to accommodate. Of course, we are delighted to assist with groups of 2 to 150 travelers.
-
When is the best time to travel?
It varies by destination. High season (for golf) is as follows;
-
Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, France & Italy
April – October.
During the summer season you will enjoy the best possible chance of good weather. However Britain does experience changeable, unpredictable weather year round and it is therefore best to anticipate.
-
New Zealand & Australia
September – April
Peak season is December - February/March
-
Spain, Portugal & South Africa
January - December
South Africa is attractive all year round. Many prefer to visit from October - March. The summer months in the south of Spain and Portugal can be very hot and the condition of the courses deteriorates. Therefore the peak seasons in Spain and Portugal would be April – June & September – November.
-
Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, France & Italy
-
What forms of payment do you accept?
Checks, MasterCard, VISA or wire transfer/ACH
-
Do I need travel insurance?
We strongly suggest and offer an attractive travel protection program. This information is described on the reservations forms.
