Tom Doak’s dream of designing a golf course in Scotland came spectacularly true when The Renaissance Club opened in 2008 next door to Muirfield and five minutes from North Berwick. The original 18 holes were carved out of a 300-acre pine forest many of which were removed but a number left standing in strategic positions beside fairways and greens. Five years later a land swap with Muirfield gave TRC access to the coastline where three new holes have been added including the dramatic par four 10th which plays along the shore to a tilted green set hard against the Firth of Forth. The Scottish Open has been played here but there are multiple tees that make the course comfortable and enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.
