PerryGolf is proud to partner with Azamara® for an exceptional 14 night, 7 round golf voyage with an intensive itinerary around the full coastline of Spain & Portugal onboard the outstanding 700 guest Azamara Journey. We begin in Barcelona with eight captivating ports of call ahead including Valencia, Cartagena, Malaga, Gibraltar, Seville, Lisbon, Vigo, La Coruna and Bilbao before concluding our voyage in the iconic French city of Bordeaux.   Our golf includes seven outstanding rounds including El Saler, Finca Cortesin, La Reserva, Royal Seville, Oitavos Dunes, Vigo, and Uruburu.

Our voyage includes a number of evenings in port, plus overnights in port in Seville, Lisbon, and Bilbao, a real opportunity to enjoy and get to know these cities in depth.  A highlight will also be our planned daylight navigation of the Guadalete River right to the heart of Seville, an opportunity denied to larger ships. ...Read More.

Azamara Journey, which serves as our perfect floating boutique hotel and clubhouse, is a mid-sized luxury vessel nimble enough to access smaller ports yet large enough to provide every amenity you would expect, from a choice of fine dining and live entertainment, to a well-equipped gym and full-service spa.  Forty-six suites are available with English butler style service which routinely book early.  Sailing schedules often include extended stays in port plus the occasional overnight which allows for a truly immersive experience.  Better still, these cruises are inclusive of a selection of beers, spirits, soft drinks, bottled water, specialty coffees plus wine with lunch and dinner along with gratuities for housekeeping, dining and bar staff.  Azamara also proudly boasts two unique signature events on each cruise – an AzAmazing Evening℠ and the White Night party – complimentary to all guests and consistently well received.

Every aspect of the golf program is fully managed by PerryGolf staff onboard and ashore. Your clubs will be ready and waiting at each venue. Tee times and pairings arranged and posted in advance. A convenient transportation schedule affords suitable time to warm up at the range, and to make the almost inevitable pro shop merchandise purchase. Carts are always included, subject to availability.  A friendly competition is staged at a selected course, with prizes awarded at our farewell gathering.  A snack lunch is included on-course plus an open bar operates in the clubhouse at the conclusion of the round.  Our typical guest list which brings together like-minded individuals generally numbers between 40 and 50, with new friendships invariably formed during each cruise.  Many guests are golfing couples but an equal number are golfers travelling with a non-golfing spouse.  Specially arranged onboard golf group social functions, to which all accompanying non-golfing spouses are most warmly welcomed, further enhances the club-like environment.  The award winning Azamara Shore Excursions® program, offering a wide variety of off ship excursions, also caters beautifully to our non-golfing guests during days when our golfing excursions are underway.

The “2023 Spain & Portugal Golf Cruise” is a genuinely full-featured vacation and a special opportunity to enjoy yourself in the company of like-minded new friends!

Detailed Itinerary

PRINT THIS ITINERARY

JUNE 3, SATURDAY: BARCELONA, SPAIN (EMBARK BY 3:30PM / SAIL 5:00PM)

Barcelona is the 11th most visited city in the world according to MasterCard’s 2014 Global Destinations Index and 3rd most popular in Europe behind London and Paris. There’s a lot to like in this Olympic City (1992) from the food to the beaches, the weather and the night life. For many visitors however Barcelona is about architecture, especially the work of Antoni Gaudi. His Sagrada Familia in the city center is astounding. Construction began on the church in 1882; it is scheduled for completion in 2026 on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death.  Azamara ships will almost always dock at the foot of Las Ramblas just steps from the Christopher Columbus statue. You will literally walk off the ship and into the city. No taxi required!

Embark Azamara Journey beginning at 1:00PM. All aboard by 3:30PM.

Welcome Cocktails & Briefing this evening. Meet your fellow participants and PerryGolf staff.

JUNE 4, SUNDAY: VALENCIA, SPAIN (8:00AM / 10:00PM)

GOLF: El Saler Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Valencia within the Albufera Nature Park. Designed by Javier Arana, one of the most prestigious Spanish designers and opened in 1968, it sits nearby the beach occupying terrain dotted with pine trees and sand dunes and has a distinctly “links” feel. It’s famous "cats claw" (not dissimilar to the Monterey Peninsula’s “iceplant”) is certainly to be avoided in the rough.

SIGHTSEEING: Valencia has come a very long way since 138 BC when it was founded as a Roman colony. Today it is Spain’s third largest city after Madrid and Barcelona. It has one of the world’s most prosperous local economies. The story you’ll probably take home however is about one of the most striking ranges of architecture imaginable. Of course you’ll find antiquity in many forms such as Valencia’s Gothic cathedral which was built over a mosque after the Christian reconquest of 1238. You will also find the space-age City of Arts and Sciences, a massive project by neofuturistic architect Santiago Calatrava (World Trade Center Transportation Hub) whose showpiece is Oceanogràfic – one of the world’s biggest aquariums, with polar zones, underwater tunnels and an underwater restaurant. The juxtaposition is startling. And you’ll have a full day to immerse yourself in it!

Enjoy Valencia on your own arrangements or via Azamara Shore Excursions®.

JUNE 5, MONDAY: CARTAGENA, SPAIN (11:00AM / 6:00PM)

Cartagena is strategically located amongst a number of historic sailing routes, and has been colonized by a veritable who’s who of Mediterranean superpowers over the millennia. The result is a rich and multi-layered cultural heritage, and a history both glorious and turbulent. From atop a hill, Concepción Castle served as a fortress for Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, and Castilians. The 13th century Old Cathedral stands on the remains of a Roman Theater just discovered in 1987. More recent architectural contributions include modernist designs of public buildings and private dwellings by pupils of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi.

JUNE 6, TUESDAY: MALAGA, SPAIN (8:00AM / 10:00PM)

GOLF: Finca Cortesin is ranked as one of Spain’s finest golf courses by Golf Digest Magazine. Cabell B. Robinson’s design beautifully complements the natural landscape. It provides a perfect balance between 20 varieties of flora, the typical Mediterranean forest and the perfectly manicured bermuda grasses of the golf course. Finca Cortesin played host to the prestigious Volvo World Match Play Championship for 3 years, with many of the world’s finest professional competing.

SIGHTSEEING: Malaga is found on Spain’s famous Costa del Sol along with its coastal and inland neighbors Rincon de la Victoria, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Alhaurin de la Torre, Mijas and Marbella. The important cultural infrastructure and the rich artistic heritage have culminated in the nomination of Malaga as a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture. The internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso and actor Antonio Banderas were both born in Malaga.

JUNE 7, WEDNESDAY: GIBRALTAR, UNITED KINGDOM (7:30AM / 6:00PM)

GOLF: La Reserva was designed by acclaimed golf course architect Cabell B. Robinson and is carved into the hillside with stunning vistas down to the Mediterranean Sea and up to the Andalusian hills. Opened in 2003, its wide, sweeping fairways lead on to large greens with gentle but challenging undulations. It has fast become a must-play for any golfer visiting southern Spain and is a fitting next chapter in Sotogrande’s proud golfing legacy.

SIGHTSEEING: The Rock of Gibraltar is a sight to behold rising nearly 1,400 feet out of nowhere located in a strategic position at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. It overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar and is linked to Spain by a narrow isthmus. Most of the upper Rock, starting just above the town, is a nature reserve with spectacular views accessible by cable car. Gibraltar is imposing but small. It measures less than six square kilometres and is inhabited by around 30,000 people made up of Gibraltarians, British, Moroccans, Indians and Spanish. There is a colony of the famous, camera-hogging Barbary apes who run free in a semi-wild state. Gibraltar is a British self-governing colony and a member of the European Union by virtue of Britain's membership.

JUNE 8, THURSDAY: SEVILLE, SPAIN (1:00PM / IN PORT)

Enjoy a scenic navigation of the Guadalete River on board Azamara Journey, an opportunity denied to larger ships.

SIGHTSEEING: Seville - the passionate nature of Sevillanos is evident in their devotion to bullfighting, flamenco, and fiesta. Food too, it appears, as Seville is credited with the invention of tapas. Join in with the locals as they graze from bar to bar, making an entire meal out of the experience. The city also has a rich history evident in its old quarters and landmarks. The great cathedral is immense, lavishly ornamented with paintings and sculptures, and copious quantities of gold. The Alcazar, the main palace, is exquisitely decorated in Moorish style, with themed gardens laid out in terraces.

In the early afternoon, we commence our navigation of the Guadalete River as we head back out to sea for our overnight sailing to Lisbon.

JUNE 11, SUNDAY: LISBON, PORTUGAL (11:00AM / IN PORT)

GOLF: Oitavos Dunes is located on the most westerly tip of Europe and mixes wondrous views of the Atlantic Ocean against the stunning backdrop of the Sintra Mountains. Oitavos was designed by the renowned Arthur Hills and is one of two European Courses that bear his name. The course was inaugurated in 2001 and has been ranked in the top 100 in the world. Oitavos Dunes is a par 71 course that measures 6,900 yards from the competition tees. The layout is a lovely mixture of woodland and links-type holes that capitalize on the existing landscape.

SIGHTSEEING: Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world. Its magnificent harbour made it a logical trading port as far back as the Phoenicians, as well as a departure point for 15th century voyages sponsored by Prince Henry the Navigator, patron of Portuguese explorers. The city is rich in architecture, from Romanesque and Gothic to postmodern, and criss-crossed by monument-studded grand boulevards. Today it is seeking a place on the world stage by hosting, in addition to its own active cultural calendar, film festivals, art, fashion and design shows, book fairs, marathons, and rock concerts.

JUNE 13, TUESDAY: VIGO, SPAIN (9:00AM / 8:00PM)

GOLF:  The Ría de Vigo Golf Club enjoys magnificent views over the Vigo estuary.  Built in 1992, it was designed by renowned Spanish architect Ramón Espinosa and takes best advantage of its dramatic location.  It provides an excellent test, with the ever present sea and mountain backdrop.  The 18 holes combine beauty, difficulty and quality in equal measure.  All in all it presents a highly enjoyable venue.

SIGHTSEEING: Vigo is located less than 20 miles from the north Portuguese border in the Galicia region, and dates back to the middle ages. It is renowned for its lovely beaches, stunning panoramas, and laid-back atmosphere.  Head to Parque Monte del Castro and Castro Fortress for great views of the city, then walk down the hill through the Celtic ruins and the old city before enjoying a meal of fresh seafood at one the city’s excellent restaurants.

JUNE 14, WEDNESDAY: LA CORUNA, SPAIN (7:30AM / 7:00PM)

You would be hard-pressed to find a city more shaped and impacted by the sea than La Coruna, Spain.  You can see this influence in the Roman Tower of Hercules, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated stone lighthouse. Standing guard over the city, the 180-foot Tower marks one end of the spectacular Paseo Marítimo promenade—one of the longest in Europe—and has been in operation since approximately the 2nd century AD.  Walk some or all of the eight-mile long promenade to see some of the city’s other waterfront highlights like the Marina, Castelo de San Antón, and the Millennium monument.     The strong nautical influence can also be seen in the characteristic glazed window balconies (also known as galerias) that give La Coruna its nickname the Glass City.

JUNE 15, THURSDAY: BILBAO, SPAIN (1:00PM / IN PORT)

GOLF: Uraburu Golf was designed by revered two times Masters Champion José María Olazabal, a native of this area.  Each hole is a an example of the marriage of golf and its surroundings, highlighted by centennial oaks, conifers and other native trees, providing magical surroundings and views for the golfer.   The beauty of the course lies in its diversity, and it provides an outstanding experience for the visiting golfer.

SIGHTSEEING: If Bilbao wasn’t always a household name, it was transformed into one with the opening of Frank Gehry’s groundbreaking Guggenheim Museum in 1997. Located in the heart of the Basque Country, Bilbao became an instant media darling and tourist mecca. And that was just the beginning of an exciting phase of development in infrastructure and cultural activity which, combine with the Basque love of food, wine and laughter, solidified the city’s place in the annals of tourism.

JUNE 17, SATURDAY: BORDEAUX, FRANCE (7:00AM / DISEMBARK AT 9:00AM)

Disembark Azamara Journey at 9:00AM.

Bordeaux’s fortunes have long been tied to viticulture, beginning with an expansion of the wine trade with England in the 14th century. As a result it is a handsome and cohesive city of uniform classical and neoclassical style, with monumental buildings and many fine estates financed by the almighty grape. The nearby countryside is alive with wine chateaux sporting impressive appellations such as Pauillac, Sauternes, Margaux, and Saint-Emilion. A visit is an excellent opportunity to learn more about wine production and appreciation, which of course requires a considerable amount of tasting to accomplish.

Oitavos was designed by the renowned Arthur Hills and is one of only two European Courses that bear his name. The course is a recent addition to the area in golfing terms and was inaugurated in 2001 while now ranking in the world’s top 100 courses. Oitavos Dunes is a par 71 course that measure 6,300m from the competition tees. The course is a lovely mixture of woodland and links-type holes that make the most of the existing landscape.

<Ría de Vigo Golf Club

Ría de Vigo Golf Club enjoys magnificent views over the Vigo estuary.

<Uraburu Golf

Uraburu Golf was designed by the revered two times Masters Champion José María Olazabal, a native of this area. Each hole is a an example of the marriage of golf and its surroundings, highlighted by centennial oaks, conifers and other native trees, providing magical surroundings and views for the golfer. The beauty of the course lies in its diversity, and it provides an outstanding experience for the visiting golfer.

Important Information

Golf Handicap Limit: The golf courses we play around the world offer varying challenges. Players often require to be of a certain standard to properly and fully experience them in the company of likeminded fellow golfers. We therefore set a maximum permitted golf handicap to participate on our tours and cruises; The maximums are 28 for men and 36 for ladies.

Golf Courses: The included list may be subject to change in the event of any club accepting any conflicting national or international event, or for any other reason. Should such a situation occur, PerryGolf will endeavour to book a course of comparable standard, and all booked guests would be notified of the change and replacement venue at the earliest opportunity.

Transfers: No transfers are included to or from the ship at arrival/departure airports.
