Portmarnock Golf Club, a true test awaits

Portmarnock Golf Club, is arguably the most distinguished club in the Republic of Ireland.  A private members club that has a proud history and is built on the traditions of the game but at the same time is most welcoming to the visiting golfer.  I recently played the links on a soft April day in short sleeves and enough of a breeze to really add to the challenge.  A recent spell of dry weather has left the links firm for this time of year and downwind you need to allow for the ball rolling out.  This is fine as the greens at Portmarnock are vast, but you do need to have a good feel for distance and hit the right sort of approach to get it close.

Portmarnock is consistently ranked in the top 100 in the world and in the top 3 courses in the whole of Ireland.  It is a strong layout calling for accurate driving and a tidy short game.  With very few exceptions (tee shots at the 5th & 12th) what you have to do is out in front of you.

Work is nearing completion on a new green at the first.  It adds a new dimension to the approach shot as the green has been reset bringing it set closer to the water on the right.   They have also removed some trees at the back of the green which will expose the hole more to the wind.  A rough management program has recently began, allowing a little more margin for error from the tee than before, this is intended to please both the members and visitors alike as the rough was really penal last summer.  I think the only person not too happy may be Joey the Club Professional, ball sales were strong last year!

For those you visiting Portmarnock this summer you are in for a treat.  Further reading on Portmarnock can be found on this article.  Click here.

O’Callaghan Hotels, Dublin

Dublin City Centre is the perfect place to be based for a few nights as you can play some of the great courses in the surrounding area – Portmarnock, European Club, The Island, K-Club and County Louth to name but a few.

It’s also a city blessed with five star properties; however, as is the case with all major cities, these can prove to be on the expensive side for the average traveller.  There are however excellent, yet relatively inexpensive options in the city centre  courtesy of the O’Callaghan Group; a privately owned Irish group of hotels.  They own four properties, all in ideal locations within the city centre; either overlooking Merrion Square or Stephen’s Green; making them perfect for exploring the city’s fantastic shops, sights, restaurants and bars.

The 4 star properties include the traditional Davenport, the contemporary Alexander, the boutique style Stephen’s Green and the charming Mont Clare.

With something for every type of traveller, and at great prices, one of the hotels is bound to suit.

The Birthplace of Guinness

A trip to Dublin is a must when visiting the Emerald Isle.  Whilst there, I recommend you take in all that the city has to offer; whether it be the history, local sights, the amazing cuisine or the local liquor.  On a recent trip there, I decided to do some sightseeing associated with the latter.  Everyone is familiar with Ireland’s number one export “Guinness” and the associated side effects.  I therefore decided to educate myself on the origins of this beer and the brewing process.

The museum is shaped to resemble a pint glass and is set over 7 floors, enclosed in one of the original brewing storehouses in Dublin.  The tour educates you about every single aspect of the brewing process and the history/origins of this national drink.  If, like me, the idea of climbing seven floors makes your knees shake, please do not let this put you off,  as at the end of every rainbow is a pot of gold…and this is no exception.  Upon scaling the dizzy heights you are rewarded with a free pint of Guinness in The Gravity Bar, where you can relax and take in the best view the city has to offer.

Irish Golf Course Ratings…by the Irish

I read with interest the recently published Irish course ratings in ‘Backspin’, an Irish golf magazine.  The ratings were awarded by Irish pros, amateurs and the media…and the resulting list makes for some fascinating reading.  The biggest surprise to me was Ballybunion being rated 7th in the Links Courses category – I have played there in the past and thought the course was fantastic.  I was also interested to see how well the courses in the Dublin area and Northern Ireland fared, especially the links courses which our clients usually prefer to play.  Click here to see details of the full list.

Making use of this list, you could have a fantastic trip based in Dublin then head up to Newcastle and finish on the north coast of Northern Ireland.  In Dublin you could play Portmarnock, The European Club, The Island and Royal Dublin (or the Links at Portmarnock Hotel).  You could then head north (it’s just over an hour to Baltray) and play Co Louth before continuing up to Newcastle.  Here you would play Royal County Down and then continue to the north coast where you might be based at Bushmills and would be perfectly positioned to play Royal Portrush, Portstewart and Ballyliffin.  This would make for a great trip and would allow you to play 9 of the top 18 courses mentioned, including all of the top 5!  And that is only including the links courses; if you want to mix in a couple of parkland courses, there is also the K Club and Druid’s Glen, both just outside Dublin.  What are you waiting for?!

Dining in Dublin…what recession?

As if to prove a point that not all prices are being reset in the “new normal” economy I read this article in the Wall Street Journal Online that references the noted restaurants in Dublin that many of our clients ask about.
