The Castle Course
St. Andrews, Scotland
The
countdown has begun. After breaking ground in March of 2005, the magic
David McLay Kidd and company has worked on 220 acres of cliff top farmland
two miles east from town center will be open for play in the spring
of 2008. The Castle Course will be the seventh 18 hole
layout in the Links Trust portfolio, playable between 5,300-7,200 yards,
and open to the public year round. The site offers an entirely new ambience
for golf in St. Andrews given its high ground views looking west to
the city and overlooking St. Andrews Bay. As you’d imagine, the
land has a rich history dating to the mid eighth century when it was
part of a hunting ground for Pictish kings who adopted St Andrew as
their patron saint. The Castle Course is not a classical out and back
links layout but it has been designed with the tradition very much in
mind. Approaches will allow play for bump and run as well as pitches.
The grasses are a bent and fescue mix. Holes 9 and 18 will share a double
green.

Andrews Links Trust.

The Farm at Cape Kidnappers
Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
The world’s 10th best golf course outside the US (May 2007 Golf
Digest) will soon offer five-star accommodation to compliment its utterly
unique experience. Cape Kidnappers new lodge, or “The
Farm”, will resemble a cluster of farm buildings reflecting
the site’s history as a 6,000 acre sheep and cattle ranch. The
main building includes two dining rooms and a covered loggia featuring
a gourmet a la carte menu along with the facility’s largest four
suites, each at 708 square feet. Situated a short walk from the Lodge
are eight Ridge Suites, similarly spacious at 683 square feet and offering
the same spectacular view from their vantage point 800 feet above the
Pacific. On top of the hill behind the Lodge are ten Hilltop Suites
which in conjunction with the four bedroom Owners Cottage featuring
fireplaces, walk-in closets and private balconies offer accommodate
for every preference.
The Farm is scheduled to receive its first guests this November, just
prior to the December through March high season in the southern hemisphere.
Further information is available at Cape
Kidnappers.
Monte Rei Golf Club
Eastern Algarve, Portugal
One
of the most eagerly awaited new layouts in Continental Europe is ready
for play! According to Golf World magazine, Jack Nicklaus’ new
Monte Rei Golf Club opening this month in Portugal’s
Eastern Algarve “will do for the region what Sandy Lane did for
Barbados and Loch Lomond did for the Highlands". That’s high
praise to be sure but all the pieces do look to be in place. Situated
in this largely unspoiled portion of the Iberian Peninsula with wonderful
views of the Atlantic and a back drop of the dramatic Serra do Caldeira?o
mountains to the north, Monte Rei definitely has the setting. The North
Course, the first of two Nicklaus will build, is routed through 173
acres of rolling hills dotted generously by umbrella trees. Water plays
on eleven holes which include five 3-pars and five 5-pars. Monte Rei’s
equally impressive, 43,000 square foot clubhouse offers a 'Mediterranean
Revival' style environment with every amenity including food service
from short order to fine dining.
A :60 movie is available at Monte
Rei Movie.
The Carrick on Loch Lomond,
Dunbartonshire, Scotland
This
apple didn’t fall far from the tree. De Vere’s new Carrick
Course on Loch Lomond shares stunning views of the loch and
the Ben Lomond mountain with its acclaimed neighbor -- Loch
Lomond Golf Club -- all the while offering splendid character
of its own. Canadian designer Doug Carrick has crafted the resort-style,
championship course opened in May with traditional Scottish elements
such as sod walled bunkers, fescue, and gorse along with forgiving fairways
and multiple sets of tees. Enjoying idyllic surroundings on 300 acres
just a few miles from Cameron House, the magnificent new resort provides
fabulous luxury lodges, chic new "mansion-house" apartments,
restaurants and a spa offering tremendous appeal for couples and families.

Carrick on Loch Lomond.
Spey Valley Golf Course
Aviemore, Scottish Highlands
If
part of your plan to play the Highlands is to travel the scenic route
along the A9, now you’ll find it even more interesting than usual.
Thirty minutes south of Inverness, Dave Thomas’ new Spey
Valley Golf Course is open for its first full season with a
slew and well worth a visit. The 7,177-yard heathland layout first opened
in July of 06, and after bedding-in well over the winter is ready for
primetime. The majestic, frequently snow-capped Cairngorms Mountains
define the scene while the course works its way through a Caledonian
pine forest and a virtual carpet of beautiful, fragrant, treacherous
purple heather. The meticulous fairways are generous however so tee
it high, particularly on 641-yard fifth, one of the longest holes in
Scotland
Further information is available at Spey
Valley Golf Course.
The Royal Golf Hotel
Dornoch, Scotland
Peter de Savary as Chairman of Savvy Destinations has acquired the
Royal Golf Hotel, Dornoch. In doing so, de Savary renews
a long association with the Highlands where he previously owned Glenborrodale
Castle and Skibo Castle (1990 to 2003) and where he launched the very
successful Carnegie Club. The Royal Golf Hotel is located on the first
tee of the Royal Dornoch course. The 25 bedroom hotel
has now been closed for a complete refurbishment program and will reopen
in April 2008. Located less than an hour’s drive from Inverness,
the hotel is set overlooking the links and Dornoch’s sandy beaches.
de Savary was quoted as saying “Having greatly enjoyed my time
previously at Glenborrodale Castle and Skibo Castle, I am very excited,
passionate and enthusiastic to have the opportunity to create at the
Royal Golf Hotel an experience that golfers and visitors to Scotland
will find as memorable as their round of golf itself on the Dornoch
Links. I am delighted to renew my association with the Royal Burgh of
Dornoch and will apply my energies to this historic hotel”.
