New Pride in South Africa: Pinnacle Point

Pinnacle PointMagnificently perched atop 600 foot sea cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, newly christened Pinnacle Point (pictured above) will elevate South African golf onto the world stage like none before it. With six exhilarating holes played across deep chasms to greens built on cliffs, a round here is not for the faint hearted. Unlike many courses that have a few “flash” holes set amongst mediocrity, Pinnacle Point has 18 holes of stunning quality, all contributing to what some are calling “extreme” golf.  There is a sea view from every hole whose horizon conspires with dramatic elevation changes and wide ravines to deceive the eye.  Buy a yardage book by all means, but truth be told you have to play it twice!

PerryGolf Named 2006 Golf Tour Operator of the Year

The Scottish Golf Tourism industry’s 2006 annual awards ceremony at the Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club named PerryGolf as Golf Tour Operator of the Year. The awards are voted on by the golf tourism industry members including hotels, golf courses, transport providers, caddie masters and tour operators. Golf Course of the Year was won by Kingsbarns with neighboring Fairmont St Andrews winning in the Resort Hotel category. Other Hotel of the Year awards went to The Claymore House Hotel in Nairn (Small Hotel), Greywalls Hotel (Country House) and the refurbished Macdonald Marine Hotel in North Berwick (Large Hotel).

As you might imagine over our years since 1984, we’ve seen every make and model of golf travel proposal.  Over and again, it is astounding to see how proposals for the same trip can be so different.   Simple interpretation is one of the biggest reasons, a “nice” hotel means 3-star to some and 4-star to others.  The scheduled golf is another. For example, you might provide instruction that “We’d be happy with Kingsbarns or Crail depending on availability.”  Fair enough but in terms of the greens fees these two are apples and oranges.   Does the quote include a sedan or minivan? A driver?    Are you scheduled to play on your day of arrival or not?  Your proposals may include the same hotels, but if the room categories are different the cost will be too.  We have taken great lengths at PerryGolf to educate our travel specialists to ask the right questions, and to subsequently provide an accurate and highly detailed proposal no later than the next business day. Even so we fully understand that comparing proposals can be a puzzle. If ever you would like to be assured that you are comparing apples to apples – or not – feel free to spend as much time as you require with our staff to get the answers you need.  This way you’ll have a full understanding of both so that you can book the exact trip you want at a price you trust

Busy Nick Faldo:  New Projects in Northern Ireland, South Africa and the Algarve.

The man is hot.  Just after the Golf Channel announced that Nick Faldo would be its lead PGA Tour analyst in 2007, CBS hired him to replace Lanny Wadkins. He’s the 2008 Ryder Cup Captain for the Euros, and he’s building golf courses in three of our favorite spots:  South Africa, Portugal’s Algarve and Northern Ireland.  Nick FaldoLa Repose Resort on the East Cape is Faldo’s first in South African, where he will design two “championship standard” courses on a striking coastal site.  “It is bordered on one side by the 60km Alexandria dune field (the biggest coastal field of sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere), on the other by sprawling parkland and just a stone’s throw from a superb, pristine beach,” he says.  The development also shares the neighborhood with a number of game reserves, one of which we are always keen to recommend – the Shamwari Game Reserve.  The Amendoeira Golf Resort, in one of the Algarve’s less developed areas will offer “a real feel of Arizona which I am confident will emerge as one of the best examples of a desert-style course in Europe.” according to Faldo.  The Lough Erne Golf Resort in North West Ireland, one of several Irish projects by Faldo in the works or recently completed (Ballyliffin renovation), is spectacularly situated alongside the shores of Castlehume Lough and Lough Erne which will also be home to a luxury “outdoor lifestyle” hotel with 69 elegant bedrooms including 26 luxury suites.  Both golf course and hotel are scheduled to open in the summer of 2007

LINKS Magazine’s 2006 Travel Poll

Our long time colleagues and friends at LINKS Magazine released their newest Travel Poll in the November/December issue.  The Old Course, St. Andrews (77%) placed in its usual position atop “Most Like To Play in Britain”, this year ahead of Carnoustie (49%).  Ballybunion (65%) turns up big for Ireland/Northern Ireland ahead of Royal County Down (35%).  It will be interesting to see the 2007 Poll for Southeast Resorts after Travel PollLINKS Readers have a chance to experience the recently and sensationally renovated Sea Island Resort.  After several visits this year, we can give every assurance that this is truly one of the finest, most complete golf resorts in American.

The magazine’s usual fine coverage of links golf continues in this issue with a feature on Elie Golf House Club in Scotland.  Note also the photographs of The Links at Fancourt, Gary Player’s masterpiece in South Africa.
