Portugal's Algarve

Dromoland Castle Opens Golf Academy/Practice Facility

The transformation of Dromoland Castle's Dromoland Golf and Country Club is now complete, and impressive. The par 72, 6850 yard championship course reopened in 2004 after a total, €5 million renovation by designers Ron Kirby and the late Joe Carr. "Together they created the wonderful challenging parkland, a course we like to consider as the Augusta of Ireland." explains Michael Vaughan, Director of Golf. Now the club announces the opening of The Dromoland Castle Golf Academy. The stone clad, slate roofed structure houses 9 driving range bays and a fully enclosed teaching bay. All the bays are fitted with Golf-Tech's second generation, fully automated 'Power Tees'. In the summer months, two 500 square meter grass tees will offer turf conditions exactly as they are found on the golf course.. With four bunkered target greens ranging between 100 and 250 meters and at a total length of 300 meters, the driving range will provide a wide variety of shot selection. Both putting greens offer the same Penn A4/G6 Creeping Bent grass as used on the golf course. The bunker and chipping green offer a number of lies, slopes and grass lengths. There is also a riveted face links style bunker, modeled on the famous 'Road Hole' bunker on the 17th at St Andrews. The resort's PGA Golf Professional, David Foley, will be available to provide tuition to all levels of golfer. This outstanding facility is reserved exclusively for Residents and Golf Members.

Old Course Hotel, incorporating Kohler Waters Spa, was voted "Scottish Hotel Spa of the Year" at The Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards 2006.

Royal Aberdeen: The 2011 Walker Cup match is to be played at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, the sixth oldest in the world.

South West Ireland

On the southside of Dingle Bay, between Tralee on the north and Waterville to the south, is Co. Kerry's oldest new layout. Founded in 1889 Dooks Golf Links has long been regarded as one of Ireland's hidden gems. Hidden is likely to change however with the recent reopening of the course after Martin Hawtree's extensive remodeling. With 16 redesigned holes adding more than 500 yards, Dooks has done an outstanding job of catching up with the game.
