St
Andrews Links Trust, the organization responsible
for the management of the six public golf courses
in St Andrews, is has purchased land for a seventh
golf course.
The land consists of over 200
acres of farmland to the southeast of St. Andrews,
around one mile from the town centre. It lies between
Kinkell Braes Caravan Park and St Andrews Bay Resort
& Spa. It will be used for the creation of a
high quality golf course, in keeping with the standards
expected at St Andrews.
Alan McGregor, general manager
of St Andrews Links Trust. said, "We have consulted
with several experts who agreed unanimously that
an extremely good quality golf course could be created
on the land in question. It will complement our
existing courses and offer increased flexibility
and choice to our golfers."
The architect selected to achieve
the goal of the Links Trust is David McLay Kidd,
a talented young Scot whose credits include Bandon
Dunes, a Top 100 Course in the World and the highly
acclaimed, new, private Queenwood course just outside
of London.
The seventh course is being created
in response to increasing demand to play, in particular
over the last decade. The demand is increasing from
both local golfers, those who live in or near the
town, and from visiting golfers. 2001 was a record
year for the Links with the total rounds played
reaching 215,000. Demand for season tickets from
local golfers has risen over a third over the last
four years.
