BOOK REVIEW

The new "The World's 500 Greatest Golf Holes" by George Peper and the editors of Golf Magazine (Artisan, $60), is the ultimate golf coffee table book. Weighing in at over 6 pounds, you may have to reinforce not only your coffee table, but the floor supporting it! But what a magnificent book. The choices may not be yours, but they are well-thought out and the superb photography from all the greats including: Fred Vuich, the Henebrys, Mike Klemme, Larry Lambrecht and Brian Morgan, among others, is breathtaking. It provides the ultimate photographic scrapbook of great holes played, a travel log for future courses on your 'must play' list, glimpses into private enclaves that you may never play, and thoughts to devise your own 'best' lists.

The Book is divided into the Best 18, The Next 100 and the Best 500. The 500 is conveniently arranged into geographic chapters, including one for Great Britain and Ireland, for easy reference. The advisor was especially pleased that our only hole-in-one hole, the formidable 'Devil's Cauldron' – Par 3, 4th at Banff Springs, opens the book.

For those who love picking off the best of the best - the variety of 'best' lists at the end of the book should provide years of trips to play the Top 18 Most Scenic, Most Difficult, Best Links, Best Ocean, Best in Europe, Best Short Par 4's, Best Holes with Bunkers and the ultimate challenge – the Best Most Nearly Impossible to Get On, among others.
