ADVISOR RECOMMENDED READING
For
the past decade Larry Lambrecht has been expertly
photographing the magnificent links venues of Ireland’s
dramatic coastline. Many of his outstanding photos
grace the Advisor, PerryGolf website and brochures.
He has produced a volume of photography representing
this golf odyssey in a 210-page coffee table book,
Emerald Gems – The Links of Ireland
($95.00), covering ALL the links and a few of the
seaside courses.
The book measures 12” x
16” in a landscape format, and contains over
150 images, with prose written by some of golf’s
most acclaimed journalists from Ireland
– including Dermot Gilleece, Pat Ruddy, Ivan
Morris, Patricia Davies, and David Feherty. The book
will be available by April 1st. Books may be ordered
through the website www.irishgolfphotos.com
or 1-888-LOWDRAW.
It’s
the 50th anniversary of, ‘the wee ice man,’
Ben Hogan’s historic Open Championship victory
at Carnoustie. And a perfect time to add the incomparable
11 x 14 coffee table book Ben Hogan –
The Man Behind the Mystique (The American
Golfer, $ 60.00), by Martin Davis, to your collection.
There are hundreds (370) of historical photos, many
unpublished until now, eyewitness accounts, a tribute
“The Ben Hogan I Knew” by Valerie, his
beloved widow with award-winning New York Times columnist
Dave Anderson, and 5 magnificent gatefolds, including
a frame-by-frame swing analysis by Jim McLean. For
those who may have the earlier The Hogan Mystique,
also by Davis, this book is a great companion volume
and covers many aspects of his life, including in-depth
coverage of all aspects of the major championships
he won, all with Valerie’s approval and blessing,
not covered in the first book. www.theamericangolfer.com,

Preservation
and renovation of classic golf courses is a fairly
new concept in the United States. Right now there
is a campaign on to save the oldest course in Florida,
a timeless Donald Ross design, Ponce de Leon, from
the developer’s bulldozer, in America’s
oldest city, St. Augustine. Hopefully it will not
suffer the same fate as hundreds of classic courses
by Ross, Tillinghast, MacKenzie and others who pioneered
the game in America. In Lost Links –
Forgotten Treasures of Golf’s Golden Age
(Clock Tower Press, $45.00), Daniel Wexler provides
a fascinating look at numerous lost courses, lost
nines and lost holes, how they would have held up
today, and why their architecture was important in
the continuing development of golf in the United States.
The book is brilliantly illustrated with historic
photos and colorful routing maps of all the courses
covered. A companion book to his much heralded The
Missing Links, it is a great addition to any golf
library. Both books may be ordered through www.clocktowerpress.com
or 1-800-956-8999.
The
Advisor loves the history and tradition of the game,
especially when it is presented in new technology,
i.e., DVD format. Gordon Simmonds, a Scot and an accomplished
golfer in his own right, who authored an outstanding
definitive history of the Walker Cup, has produced
a new DVD entitled All A-Round Golf ($50),
based on the UK television series of the same name.
This fascinating 6-hour, 13-part, two-disc DVD examines
all elements that are important to the game and was
developed with the cooperation of both the R &
A and the USGA. It covers fascinating golf personalities
by famous golfers from around the world, golf history,
an in-depth look at the Rules of Golf, insights into
golf course architecture, swing fundamentals, golf’s
governing bodies, etc. Presented by an outstanding
‘cast’ of who's who in golf including
Peter Thomson, Archie Baird, Dr. Gary Wiren, Peter
Dawson, Donald Steel, Sandy Tatum and Vijay Singh.

them engaged for a lifetime. Even experienced golfers
