Day 3

Today play the New Course, St Andrews – Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895, The New Course at St Andrews is a classic test of links golf in Scotland, boasting undulating fairways carved through blankets of gorse bushes, along with challenging-but-normal-sized greens, which naturally are defended by normally obnoxious bunkers.

Gardens Tour: Enjoy a visit to Cambo Gardens. Drive out past Kingsbarns before arriving at the Cambo Estate. Here you will find a romantic Victorian walled garden designed around the Cambo burn with willow, waterfall and charming wrought-iron bridges. Ornamental potager, breathtaking snowdrops, massed spring bulbs, a lilac walk, herbaceous borders, 250 named roses in the summer, colchicum meadow and September borders lovely in the autumn.

The central point is a summer-house with bridge and willow reminiscent of a willow-pattern plate. With its large greenhouses this garden has always supplied the house with flowers, fruit while the gardeners combined creativity and knowledge of plants produces vast herbaceous borders of naturalistic plantings of interesting perennials, a wonderful ornamental vegetable garden, a beautifully planted moist garden and constant changes.

Today challenge the Old Course of St Andrews, the "Home of Golf". The Old Course has played host to the greatest golfers in the world and produced many of golf's dramatic moments. Wide double fairways, seven extensive double greens, and a multitude of intimidating bunkers are just some of the unique features you will encounter. Most recently it hosted The Open Championship in 2015.

Day 5

Gardens Tour: Journey into the Perthshire countryside to Drummond Gardens near Crieff. Pass into the inner courtyard and reach the top of the terracing and the full extent and majesty of this garden is suddenly revealed. The dominant feature of the parterre design is a St Andrew´s Cross with the multiplex 17th century sundial at its centre. A strong north-south axis runs through the garden, down the impressive flight of steps to the sundial, through the classical archway and kitchen garden beyond, cutting a swathe through woodland before rising to the top of the opposing hillside. This idea of drawing the countryside into the garden is essentially French, however Drummond is an eclectic garden and also rooted firmly in the Italian style with its fountains, terracing, urns and statuary.

Day 6

Today play the King's Course at Gleneagles Hotel. The King's course was the inspiration of James Braid, five time winner of the Open championship. It opened in 1919, representing the finest 'classical' golf course design. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the world. With the sweeping views from the tees all around, the rock-faced mountains to the north and the green hills to the south, and the peaks of the Trossachs and Ben Vorlich on the western horizon.

Day 7

Gardens Tour: Today enjoy a visit to Culzean Castle and its ornamental gardens. Located just a few miles from Turnberry, there have been gardens at Culzean since the middle of the 17th century. The original Walled Garden was situated in front of the old castle and is now the Fountain Court garden. Fan trained peaches, apricots and nectarines along with apples and pears adorned the terrace walls. When the Castle was re-designed in the late 18th century a walled garden was built in its present day situation. There have been several changes to the layout of the garden over the years but the shape and area have not changed in the last 150 years. The terraces in front of the castle are favourable south facing walls with a wide range of climbers and some tender shrubs growing. The Clematis montana plants smother the lower wall and merge in with the colourful herbaceous border at the foot of the wall. On the middle terrace the mixed border is full of interesting plants for all seasons. At the end of the border stands the imposing stone and glass orangery which contains a range of citrus trees in the winter and mixed conservatory plants in the summer.

The Walled Gardens are located away from the castle hidden behind a bank of trees that also act as a wind break from the salt laden sea breezes. The garden covers an area of 2.5 hectares and is divided into two separate parts by a central wall. On the south side of this wall are the ranges of fruit houses containing vines and peaches. These houses look out over the ornamental south garden containing several interesting features including a stone grotto dating from the early 20th century, a roundel with a pleached hornbeam hedge, a jungle area with large leafed plants, a Peaonia border, Hosta and palm beds all set off by a Cedar of Lebanon that could easily be as old as the garden itself.

The north park of the garden was the productive heart of the estate, producing all the fruit and vegetables for the castle. Although not now in full production, fruit and vegetables are still grown in this part of the garden and are offered for sale in season along with plants propagated in the garden. The side borders still provide a blaze of colour where the plants grown provide the floral decorations in the castle. The most spectacular borders in this part of the garden are the double herbaceous borders that run the whole length of the garden and are at their best in July and August.
