2017 Iberian Peninsula Golf Cruise

Portugal, Spain & France on board Azamara Journey

9 Nights | 5 Rounds | Lisbon to Barcelona | 16 - 25 September 2017

Your Better Half Saves 50% When You Book This Cruise by 31 March 2017

PerryGolf is proud to again partner with Azamara Club Cruises for an exceptional golf voyage onboard the outstanding 690 guest Azamara Journey around the Iberian Peninsula.

Our itinerary begins in Lisbon, capital city of Portugal, and concludes in the vibrant Spanish city of Barcelona. The golf lineup includes Valderrama, consistently rated #1 in continental Europe, plus PGA Catalunya ranked narrowly behind.   The well regarded Spanish layouts of Montecastillo, El Saler, and Alcanada on the Spanish island of Mallorca complete the five round program.

Our guest list typically brings together like-minded individuals sharing a love of golf. Inevitably many new friendships are formed. Many guests are golfing couples but an equal number are golfers travelling with a non-golfing spouse. The latter are also exceptionally well catered for as, in addition to the fabulous onboard facilities, a wide selection of Azamara Land Discoveries® are offered in each port. The itinerary also allows for some relaxing “time at sea” under Mediterranean skies.

Onboard, our guests are absolutely spoiled. Our favored ship Azamara Journey is small enough to provide a most intimate experience and nimble enough to access smaller ports, but large enough to provide a great choice of outstanding dining and bars; the ship also offers an exceptional full service spa, and features excellent and varied evening entertainment. In addition to all “normal” cruise features, Azamara Club Cruises include all soft drinks, specialty coffees, boutique daily wines, and a choice of select standard beers and cocktails within the cruise fare, plus all gratuities to create a thoroughly all inclusive cruise experience. Our itinerary is also set to allow for late evenings and occasional overnights in certain ports, allowing you much greater “immersion” in the destination. Just read what our past guests say. We know you will love it!

17 SEPTEMBER, SUNDAY: CADIZ, SPAIN (10:00AM / 10:00PM)

Cádiz dates over 3,000 years, is considered “the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Europe”, and is perched on a narrow strip of land surrounded by brilliant blue waters. Stroll through the barrios and narrow alleyways of the Old Town, with stops along Plaza San Antonio, Plaza de Mina, and Plaza de la Catedral, where you can see one of the city’s most famous landmarks, the Cádiz Cathedral.  In the El Pópulo district, you’ll find the second largest Roman theater in the world (which was constructed in 1st century BC), go to Tarifa for beautiful beaches, a variety of watersports, and great views of Morocco, or simply enjoy a traditional meal of Andalusian specialties like gazpacho, fried fish, Iberian ham, and a glass of Jerez sherry.

Enjoy it on your own arrangements or via Azamara Land Discoveries®

GOLF: Montecastillo is located just outside Jerez de la Frontera, famous for its sherry wine production. This Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course opened for play in 1994 with wide fairways, large bunkers, water hazards and offset fast greens. Its elevated tees offer great views of the surrounding Andalucian hills. The club succeeded Valderrama as host to the European Tour’s season ending Volvo Masters from 1997-2001.

18 SEPTEMBER, MONDAY: GIBRALTAR, UNITED KINGDOM (8:00AM / 11:00PM)

“The Rock” of Gibraltar is a sight to behold rising nearly 1,400 feet out of nowhere located in a strategic position at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. It overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar and is linked to Spain by a narrow isthmus. Most of the upper Rock, starting just above the town, is a nature reserve with spectacular views accessible by cable car.  Gibraltar is imposing but small. It measures less than six square kilometres and is inhabited by around 30,000 people made up of Gibraltarians, British, Moroccans, Indians and Spanish. There is a colony of the famous, camera-hogging Barbary apes who run free in a semi-wild state. Gibraltar is a British self-governing colony and a member of the European Union by virtue of Britain's membership.

GOLF: Valderrama is a perennial World 100 layout consistently been rated among the five best in Continental Europe. “The Augusta of Europe” is a private club originally designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones on a hill above the old Andalucian village of Sotogrande.  He was recalled in 1985 for a remake that has subsequently hosted a plethora of championships including the Volvo Masters and the 1997 Ryder Cup remembered for Europe’s late, great and charismatic captain Severiano Ballesteros.

20 SEPTEMBER, WEDNESDAY: VALENCIA, SPAIN (7:00AM / IN PORT )

Valencia has come a very long way since 138 BC when it was founded  as a Roman colony.  Today it is Spain’s third largest city after Madrid and Barcelona.  It has one of the world’s most prosperous local economies.  The story you’ll probably take home however is about one of the most striking ranges of architecture imaginable. Of course you’ll find antiquity in many forms such as Valencia’s Gothic cathedral which was built over a mosque after the Christian reconquest of 1238.  You will also find the space-age City of Arts and Sciences, a massive project by neofuturistic architect Santiago Calatrava (World Trade Center Transportation Hub) whose showpiece is Oceanogràfic – one of the world’s biggest aquariums, with polar zones, underwater tunnels and an underwater restaurant.  The juxtaposition is startling.  And you’ll have two full days to immerse yourself in it!

Enjoy it on your own arrangements or via Azamara Land Discoveries®.

Port Explorer Guide – Valencia

GOLF: El Saler Golf Club is located on the outskirts of Valencia within the Albufera Nature Park. Designed by Javier Arana, one of the most prestigious Spanish designers and opened in 1968, it sits nearby the beach occupying terrain dotted with pine trees and sand dunes and has a distinctly “links” feel. It’s famous "cats claw" (not dissimilar to the Monterey Penisula’s “iceplant”) is certainly to be avoided in the rough.

22 SEPTEMBER, FRIDAY: ALCUDIA, MALLORCA, SPAIN (9:00AM / 9:00PM )

The popular resort town of Alcudia is located on the northern end of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands found 200 miles due east of Valencia. It was the Phoenicians and Greeks who first settled here, followed in the 2nd century BC by the Romans who made Alcudia the capital. Visitors to the Old Town enter the narrow streets through one of the two gates that were constructed, along with the impressive city walls, after the conquest of the island by King Jaime I of Spain. It is possible to step up on the well preserved wall and follow it almost all around the village.  The largest wetland area in the Balearic Islands—S’Albufera Natural Park—is wonderful for a view of over 250 different bird species.

Enjoy it on your own arrangements or via Azamara Land Discoveries®.

Port Explorer Guide – Alcudia

GOLF: Alcanada was designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, and opened for play in 2003. Situated in the northern part of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, it is located right by the sea with its beautifully manicured layout blending perfectly into the typical Mallorcan landscape. The club takes its name from a nearby island just off the shore which, complete with its own lighthouse, can be seen from most of the holes. Apart from the magnificent sea view, players are surrounded by pine and olive groves throughout their round. Although a relatively well kept secret the course has already received a number of accolades from various magazines and publications.

23 SEPTEMBER, SATURDAY: PALAMOS, SPAIN (8:00AM / 9:00PM)

Palamós is found in the heart of the Costa Brava, the Wild or Rough Coast, its name derived from the rugged, rocky shoreline punctuated by excellent beaches and picturesque fishing villages.  Next to the pier is the Palamós Fishing Museum, which is well worth your time for fascinating look at this livelihood so important to the Mediterranean.  Afterwards around mid afternoon watch to see how the day’s catch is off loaded and sold to the highest bidder. Be sure to sample famous Palamós prawns which are particularly enjoyable for lunch at nearby L'Espardenya or dinner at La Selvatana which gets its supplies straight from the boats.  For a change of pace, consider a trip to Figures – home to the museum of its famous and eccentric native son, Salvador Dali, he of the extravagant mustache and melting pocket watches. Dali spent many years designing and painting the facility—in essence it is itself his single largest work, and contains not only his own creations, but his personal art collection as well.

Enjoy it on your own arrangements or via Azamara Land Discoveries®.

Port Explorer Guide – Palamos

GOLF:  The PGA Catalunya Stadium Course is rated as the 3rd best club in continental Europe according to Golf Monthly – and #1 in Spain and was designed for professional events hence the “stadium” features for spectators. It opened in 1999 and promptly hosted the Gene Sarazen World Open and the European Tour’s Spanish Open in 2000. The Spanish Open returned in 2009, then again in 2014 after which the club announced its intent to bid for the 2022 Ryder Cup.  We couldn’t imagine a better venue.

24 SEPTEMBER, SUNDAY: PORT VENDRES (CARCASSONNE), FRANCE (9:00AM / 6:00PM)

Port-Vendres is situated in the south of France on Mediterranean Sea, close to the Spanish border. In the city center explore the monuments of famed military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. Between Port-Vendres and Collioure (darling of the French Impressionist painters) is the Fort Saint Elme. This started life as a 9th century signal tower but star shaped fotifications were added in the 15th century. In the 17th century Vauban added to the fortifications. It is worth a visit not only to see the substantial fort but also for the views over the coast.  The Azamara Land Discoveries® tour of the fortified, medieval city of Carcassonne allows you to examine 20 centuries of history including the Narbonne Gate and the Basilica of Saint Nazaire and the Carcassonne Cathedral. The nearby village of Cosprons has a chapel containing a rare carving of the 'marine Christ' dating from the 14th century. The marine Christ wears a crown of rope rather than thorns. Complete your day with fresh local seafood like sea perch, tuna, and sardines paired with the region’s renowned Collioure wines, then followed by a famed Banyuls dessert wine.

25 SEPTEMBER, MONDAY: BARCELONA, SPAIN (6:00AM / IN PORT)

9:00AM Disembark Azamara Journey.

Barcelona is the 11th most visited city in the world according to MasterCard’s 2014 Global Destinations Index and 3rd most popular in Europe behind London and Paris. There’s a lot to like in this Olympic City (1992) from the food to the beaches, the weather and the night life. For many visitors however Barcelona is about architecture, especially the work of Antoni Gaudi. His Sagrada Familia in the city center is astounding. Construction began on the church in 1882; it is scheduled for completion in 2026 on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death.  Azamara ships will almost always dock at the foot of Las Ramblas just steps from the Christopher Columbus statue. You will literally walk off the ship and into the city. No taxi required!
