Following lunch return to Beijing to visit the Forbidden City, also know as the Imperial Palace it is China's largest and most significant building. Its origins date from the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). Emperor Yongle of the Ming dynasty had the palace enlarged to its present day size between 1406 and 1420, after he had transferred the capital from Nanjin to Beijing. The palace was the residence of 24 Ming and Qing emperors. Ordinary mortals were forbidden to enter the palace. The complex, which is built mainly of wood and brick, extends over an area of 720,000 sq.m/861,120sq.yd. The palace and pavilions together contain over 9999 rooms, all of which have been very well preserved. The whole place is surrounded by a 10m/33ft high wall with four corner towers and a 50m wide moat.

Once through the Forbidden City you will arrive in Tiananmen Square, up to a million people could fit into this square, making it one of the largest squares in the world. It forms not only the geographical, but also the historical core of the city. The west of the square is bordered by the colossal Great Hall of the People, the east by a further monumental building which houses the Museum of Chinese History and Chinese Revolution. The chairman Mao Mausoleum lies to the south and in the centre of the square is the Monument to the People's Heroes.

Return to Beijing for a pedicab ride to have lunch traditionally prepared by a family in Beijing’s Hutong. In the past, several thousand lanes, alleys and quadrangles formed residential areas for ordinary people living in the capital. A hutong is a unique form of community that exists only in China, meaning a small street or a lane between two courtyards. The main buildings in the hutong were almost all quadrangles, a building complex formed by four houses around a quadrangular courtyard . The quadrangles varied in size and design according to the social status of the residents and here you will enjoy learning about the daily life of ordinary Beijing citizens.

The tour will continue to the Temple of Heaven, dating back to 1420 and located in the south of the city, it incorporates a group of sacred buildings surrounded by lush vegetation. With its southern rectangular section, and its northern semi-circular section, the complex symbolizes heaven and earth. On the day of the winter solstice, having fasted and meditated for three days, the emperor would ascend the Heavenly Altar in solemn ceremony to pray for a good harvest and to offer sacrifices. The three main parts are the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the Hall of the Vault of Heaven and the Round Altar.

A typical karst formation, the Stone Forest covers an area of more than three hundred square kilometres. Scientific research has shown that what is now the Stone Forest was 270 million years ago an immense expanse of water with a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed over the years on the seafloor. As a result of the crustal movement, the seabed rose gradually and a large piece of land thus came into being. Exposed to rains and winds, eroded by the elements, the limestone ranges were shaped bv time. About 200 million years ago numerous stone peaks, pillars, and stalagmites rose abruptly from the ground and towered into the sky, extending now as far as the eye can see, like a vast forest of stone.
