Travel to Ardrossan on the North Ayrshire coast for the ferry
crossing (55mins) to Brodick, which is the largest village on the Island of
Arran. Arran is one of the most southerly islands in Scotland. A total of 56
miles in circumference, Arran is often referred to as Scotland in Miniature.
Within a short compass it captures many aspects of the beauty of Scotland as a
whole, from towering granite peaks to peaceful sandy bays overlooked by palm
trees growing in the warm climate of the Gulf Stream. Depart Brodick and travel
across the mountain road to Blackwaterfoot on the west coast of the island for
golf at Shiskine.
Golf today at Shiskine Golf Club (tbc) . The unspoiled links
is set in magnificent scenery overlooking the Kilbrannan sound with splendid
views to the Mull of Kintyre. This picturesque 12-hole layout is truly one of
the hidden gems in the world of golf. This unique course has achieved the
distinction of being included in the top 100 best courses in Britain for the
past two years, currently at number 96.
After golf continue on the north circular route hugging the western shores to
Lochranza and the Isle of Arran Distillery. One of the newest
distilleries in Scotland the first spout was turned on 29th June 1995. Since
then many awards and much acclaim have been achieved for the quality of the
whisky produced and our export endeavours. The visitor centre is home to a
display area, shop, restaurant, 30 foot waterfall and barley field. The tour
starts in an 18th century Crofters Inn, where visitors can see a presentation
about whisky making in the past and present. Following the visit return to
Auchrannie House Hotel just outside Brodick.
Overnight: Auchrannie
House Hotel: Standard Room - including Scottish
breakfast
Day 5
This morning leave the Island of Arran via the Lochranza to Cloanaig
ferry. Continue down the west shores of the Kintyre Peninsula to Campbeltown.
This gentle corner of the Highlands affords wonderful views over to the Atlantic
Ocean and out to the Islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura. Today play the magnificent championship links course at,
Machrihanish (tbc). Located on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre
between the Isle of Arran and the Hebrides, this exposed links course is one of
the finest "Hidden Gems" in the British Isles. The first tee requires your drive
to cross a corner of the Atlantic Ocean. Entered into the Top 100 Courses in the
World in the 2007 Rankings.
After golf visit Springbank Distillery. Founded in 1828, Springbank is
Scotland oldest family owned distillery. Fiercely independent, their Single
Malts are produced using traditional Victorian techniques and equipment. A visit
to Springbank is a must for any whisky fan. Traditional floor maltings, open
topped mash tun, a belt driven mill, boatskin larch wash backs, and a direct
fired wash still combine to produce the most ''handcrafted'' whisky on the
market Springbank uses 100% Scottish Barley, including an increasing proportion
of local barley. The barley is malted, then distilled, matured and bottled on
site. Three different Single Malts are produced using three different production
techniques. Springbank is lightly peated and distilled two and-a-half times.
Longrow is heavily peated and distilled twice and Hazelburn is unpeated and
triple distilled. Following the visit leave Campbeltown and drive to Balinakill
House on the west side of the Kintyre Peninsula.
Overnight: Balinakill
Country House Hotel: Standard Room - including Scottish breakfast
Day 6
Depart Balinakill this morning and take the short drive to
Kennacraig for the ferry crossing to the Isle of Islay. The Isle of Islay has
around 3200 inhabitants, covers an area of 600 square kilometres and has an
impressive 130 miles of coastline. Islay is famous for its malt whiskys and has
eight working distilleries on the island making the malt whisky industry one of
the most important sources of income for the island. The ferry will arrive in
Port Askaig or Port Ellen, once ashore drive to the Machrie on the south west
coast of the island.
Golf today at The Machrie (tbc). The course was originally laid out in
1891 by Willie Campbell and affords wonderful views
over
the bay. Apart from a few changes made in the 1970s, the course remains very
much the same as when first constructed all those years ago. Thus it is a
traditional links course, with the towering sand dunes providing natural hazards
that will challenge most golfers. A feature is the many blind holes with greens
cunningly tucked away behind the dunes.
Overnight: Machrie Hotel
& Golf Course: Standard Room - including Scottish
breakfast
Day 7
Golf again at The Machrie (tbc).
This afternoon enjoy a tour to one or more of the 8 working distilleries on
the Isle of Islay. Choose from Kilchoman, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bowmore,
Ardbeg, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich or Caol Ila.
By way of example,
Bowmore is Islay's oldest distillery, and it is here that you
will see traditional whisky making in its full glory, from the rare sight of the
malting of the barley, to the peat fired kilns, to the famous warehouses by the
shores of Loch Indaal. The elegant Visitor Centre provides the ultimate in deep
comfort, the ideal place to linger, and admire the views across Loch Indaal. You
are guaranteed the warmest of welcomes at Bowmore and, of course, a taste of
what is regarded as one of the world's finest single malts.
The
Bunnahabhain (pronounced Bu-na-ha-venn) Distillery rests
peacefully on the sheltered north-eastern coast of Islay, overlooking stunning
views out to the Paps of Jura (a range of hills on a sister island). This
quietly remote and inoffensive area provides great solitude for all who visit
her, an idyllic place for Scotch whisky distillation. It was built late 19th
century, in 1881, close to the mouth of the Margadale River, hence the name
(Bunnahabhain means "mouth of the river" from the Gaelic tongue). The
Bunnahabhain 12 year old is quite distinct from the other single malts of the
island, given the wonderfully gentle taste profile for which it is
known.
Overnight: Machrie Hotel & Golf Course: Standard Room -
including Scottish breakfast (4 Rooms, 8 passengers)
