It was announced today that St. Andrews will see the Olympic Torch meander through its streets on the 13th of June this year. The Torch will travel the length of the UK and even on to many of the larger Islands over a 70 day period. It really is an exciting time for all 4 countries in the UK and it gives communities in each country the opportunity to showcase their local cultures and offerings…of which St Andrews has many! Over the past ten or so years Scotland has seen the addition of a number of quality new links golf courses, most notably Kingsbarns, Castle Stuart, The Castle Course, and Machrihanish Dunes. Collectively they have added to the overall wealth of golf in the country, and they have each received various awards and rankings by different bodies. The latest addition to the expanding portfolio is Trump International Golf Links, scheduled to open July 2012, located a few miles north of Aberdeen on the northeast coast of Scotland.

The Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh has just completed its multi-million pound bedroom refurbishment; every bedroom has been updated and next on their list is a new bar and restaurant. These changes will be completed for the start of the season this year and, based on the high standards in the bedrooms, I’m sure the public areas and new bar and restaurant will be a great success! Click here to view the video footage of the new bedrooms.

Kingsbarns Golf Links has been voted the number one ranked new course in Britain and Ireland. The accolade, which can only go to courses built after 1960, was awarded by prestigious American magazine GolfWeek and was voted for by a panel compiled by the magazine who took a number of aspects into consideration. Second and third in the rankings also went to Scottish courses in the shape of Castle Stuart and Loch Lomond; so it was a major coup for the home of golf. It’ll be interesting to see where Trump’s course in Aberdeen will feature on the rankings next time they’re announced.

The Ryder Cup will be held over the weekend of 26-28 September in 2014, it was announced earlier today. The event, which will be held in Scotland for the first time since 1973 when it was at Muirfield, will be played over the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles. Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, was “delighted to have seen […] the many exciting changes that are being made to improve this already outstanding golf course. As well as the hi-tech efforts to reduce water on the greens, the Ryder Cup teams can expect many of the changes – proposed by Jack Nicklaus – to provide a sterner test as they seek glory during the competition.”
