I read with interest the recently published Irish course ratings in ‘Backspin’, an Irish golf magazine. The ratings were awarded by Irish pros, amateurs and the media…and the resulting list makes for some fascinating reading. The biggest surprise to me was Ballybunion being rated 7th in the Links Courses category – I have played there in the past and thought the course was fantastic. I was also interested to see how well the courses in the Dublin area and Northern Ireland fared, especially the links courses which our clients usually prefer to play. Machrihanish Golf Club is one of Scotland’s true hidden gems. Situated on the Southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, the course is not easily accessible by road and is often excluded from itineraries purely because of its location. The journey time by road from Glasgow Airport is at least 3 hours, but by sea the time can be more than halved. Most people will travel to Machrihanish whilst spending time in Ayrshire – usually in Troon or Turnberry – and with the Kintyre Express making the journey much more achievable, I think it is an excellent addition to any schedule. The title is an often asked question of me and the simple fact of the matter is that I am not a favorites type person. Every golf course has it’s pluses; some more than others.
So if you do not have a favorite, how do you measure quality of experience.
As hard as it is, the challenge is to isolate yourself from the people you are with as invariably they have an impact on your enjoyment. Pointers I look for in no particular order would include;
Welcome of golf staff – are they trained by the airlines or a premium grocery store

The hottest course on Spain’s Costa del Sol is Real Club de Golf Las Brisas. This previously very exclusive course which did not accept outside play has opened its door to PerryGolf with a very special arrangement. In terms of quality and lineage it ranks with the best on the coast. Additionally, it is close to Marbella where most of the hotels are located. It has hosted the Nations Cup and many Spanish Open’s over the years and well worth adding to your schedule while in Spain.
