Given all of the tough breaks that Christchurch, on the east coast of the South Island has endured in recent times, it is heartening to see a new golf development proceeding according to this recent article. New Zealand is truly a magnificent country with wonderful scenery, great golf, outstanding accommodations, superb wine and most importantly populated by charming, friendly people.
I have no doubt that the recent turmoil in New Zealand has affected their tourism industry. We can only hope that more good news like this in the pipeline. The recent GOLF Magazine Top 100 poll recognized Cape Kidnappers as #33 in the World as ultimately it is the cumulative effect of small pieces of information that generally help shape travelers destination of choice.

Golf Lodging So Sublime, It’s Nearly Ridiculous

For a good long while, the finest golf-specific accommodation I had ever experienced was the Lodge at Doonbeg, a spot-on reproduction of an 18th century Irish manor house where they burn peat to complete effect. Note the tense. The respective lodges at Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers meet or exceed that standard, and somehow they manage to do so without being overly grandiose.

Huka Lodge, New Zealand
I have previously blogged on how great Huka Lodge is, so I was delighted to see this great article on the Conde Nast Travel website – click here to view. Under recommended hotel and “Super Lodges” I can confirm that both Huka Lodge & Cape Kidnappers are indeed super lodges and a definite must visit while in New Zealand; the service and accommodation are second to none! The pictures just confirm how great these properties are…the best way to spend time and relax during your golf vacation.

On a recent trip to New Zealand, one of the highlights was a flying visit to the fantastic Cape Kidnappers. We arrived at around 2pm after the scenic 2 hour journey from the town of Taupo. We drew up to a rather unassuming front gate that doesn’t instantly suggest you are at one of the best golf resorts in the world. We made our way along the 8 mile private driveway to the “Farm” (as they call it). Note: to call it a farm doesn’t do it justice; as while the building is in a traditional farmhouse style, it is of a very luxurious standard. After check-in we made our way to our private lodges just a short walk from the main building. The rooms, again, are in a homely but comfortable style and each have their own reception area with bar leading into the main large bedroom which have patio doors opening onto a porch and provide a view over the estate and out to the Pacific. The bedroom also has a remote controlled ‘real’ fire and large screen TV discretely located on the wall behind some local photography…as well as a very comfortable king size bed. The bathroom is also of a high standard; a very large spacious area offering a bath with a view out to the ocean.

How many reasons do you need to take the golf trip of two lifetimes? Here’s five:
1. Our winter is their summer. (Florida is fine but New Zealand is phenomenal.)
2. Their golf is played among some of the most dramatic and diverse landscapes on earth. (Keeping your head down is not an option.)
3. New Zealand is unique for its collection of boutique luxurious lodge-style properties. (Think Four Seasons gets back to nature.)
4. Fly fishing here is absolutely second to none. (The ladies will catch Art Deco City.)
